Red Nation Documentary Film Institute offers a creative environment for students interesting in working in a non-profit or artistic field, providing valuable experience for their personal or professional career path. We are highly respected in the film world, and can add a needed spark to any resume or professional application.
Red Nation Documentary Film Institute over the years has worked with a variety of Interns and Volunteers from all educational levels, and will work with you to meet your degree requirements or personal aspirations. We are open to working with aspiring artists, filmmakers, graphic designers, or anyone interested in non-profit, community organization. Apprenticeship and Artist-in-Residence programs are also available for non-students, on a case-by-case basis.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS FOR ALL INTERNS:
Intern applicants should be Mac & PC literate and have a basic working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Interns should be energetic, outgoing and enjoy working with the public. Interns should have excellent written and oral communications skills, phone etiquette, organizational abilities and ease with working under time-lines as well as the general and industry publics. Interns also need to have the ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet required deadlines.
We currently have the following Internships available:
PR/MEDIA INTERN: PR/Media Interns, Advertising/PR , PR/Communication or Mass Media majors. This intern position is year-round and applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.
Interns must be comfortable communicating both verbally and in writing. Must be flexible based on assignments given and be familiar with the Institutes’ history, programmes/event being offered and be a creative writer. Communications and marketing backgrounds a plus.
Job Description: Assist with marketing research, pre/during and all post events along with tracking outreach educational PR/Media efforts and internet marketing highlighting social media exposures. This position also tracks all electronic, print and on-line media associated with the Institutes year-round events and programmes, especially the institute’s various film festivals.
GRAPHIC’S INTERN:
The qualified graphics intern will ideally need to be a graphic design major or enrolled in a similar degree program. Students should be familiar with Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Mac OS and basic office equipment. WordPress and website design experience is a plus, in addition to basic photography and video editing.
Job Description: Graphic interns will be responsible for assisting the Artistic Director with the Festival program guide layout, festival signage and any other year-round events or programme brochures/layouts and various other creative graphic needs that present themselves.
FILM INTERNS: The film intern position is offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer terms. This internship application process is ongoing but clearly state on your application the term that you will be applying for.
Film interns may be students majoring in mass media, communications or any other film/documentary area of study. Qualified applicants should have an appreciation for the documentary genre and also be familiar with the basic process of producing a film, from beginning to end.
Job Description: The position will vary depending on the term. All film interns will be responsible for assisting the film programmers with film entries, as well as researching and marketing/outreaches to filmmakers, students and film attendees. This intern will assist with the film mail outs and maintain the film submission entries and databases. The film intern will also assist with obtaining and marketing screenings before and during the festival. Interns will act as support staff for screenings, events and promotions during the festival and throughout the year.
Note: Film interns throughout the year may also be responsible for filming video/editing footage, panels/workshops and other special events during the various year-round festivals and events.
ADMINISTRATIVE INTERN: The administration intern position is offered year-round but clearly state on your application the term that you will be applying for.
Job Requirements: Seeking motivated individuals with self-management characteristics and excellent personal organizational skills, detail oriented and a problem solver. Must possess ability to multi-task and have good communications and technical skills and flexibility. Administrative intern should be able to work constructively and diplomatically with staff, board and volunteers and public. Must have the ability to learn quickly and adapt to constantly changing priorities and practice exceptional attention to details.
* Interest in Volunteer management or and/or applicable education or experience
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
* Data-entry experience and high computer proficiency (spreadsheets, e-mail and Internet) Database experience is an asset.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a diverse team of staff and volunteers
* Ability to multitask in a busy open-concept work environment with frequent interruptions.
Job Description:
* Assist in daily tasks which may include running errands, performing administrative /Marketing / PR work, attending various meetings. Opportunities provided to gain diverse event planning experiences and be exposed to the logistics of producing an annual film festival and/or year-round externally delivered educational and cultural programming.
* Assist with multiple areas of responsibilities by keeping filing systems, calendar and logistics for diversified administration involvements.
* Experience with Microsoft Word & Excel required, Filemaker Pro preferred.

Interns are required to complete an application form and submit a resume. At the end of each specified internship term, interns are asked to complete an Red Nation Documentary Film Institute Internship Program Evaluation form. Additionally, the intern’s manager will complete an Intern Appraisal form based on the institutions’ student requirements for completing a successful internship. Business Administration degrees with an emphasis on non-profit management, sales and marketing, advertising,public relations, computer and informational systems . Communications Degrees with an emphasis on business communications, public information, mass media, public speaking or information management. Computer/ programmes degrees with emphasis on website programming, IT, and all computer applications. Film and Television degrees or Graphic Design and Photography and Multi Media Arts and Technology degrees with emphasis on media production, web design and development, computer engineering, event planning, graphic design and multi-media.
